Service Notification | Client Advisory
Dear Valued Clients,
SC Labs’ analysis of failed pre-roll compliance batch determines cone paper material to be contaminated with Chlorpyrifos.
SC Labs is providing a preliminary warning to clients that produce and need to test their pre-roll product. Conducting a recent test that targeted rolling-paper cones, SC Labs verified positive results for the pesticide compound Chlorpyrifos, at 3-4 times the action level set by the BCC. The source of the contaminant was identified as the rolling papers during a standalone test performed on the suspected papers. It’s worth noting that the same client’s previous tests on cannabis flower passed all compliance testing for Chlorpyrifos.
The investigation is ongoing as we work with other pre-roll clients across multiple states. We do not have enough information yet to suggest that a specific paper manufacturer, brand, or batch on the shelf is problematic. However, SC Labs believes that providing prompt, critical alerts of this nature will allow you to make rapid decisions that influence the quality of your products and the success of your operations.
While standalone testing on rolling papers is not commonplace, we encourage you to qualify any of your material inputs before manufacturing. Unfortunately, in this case, the client had only pre-tested the flower used to produce the pre-rolls and the batch failed compliance testing.
If you have concerns about the source of your rolling papers, we encourage you send them to us for confirmation (mailing is available). For more information on testing contact your account manager or fill out our contact form. See below for more about Chrlorphyrifos and how best to target it and other contaminants.
Sincerely,
SC Labs
Frequently Asked Questions
Can SC Labs test rolling papers for this contaminant and others?
Yes, we are able to test rolling papers among other materials for a variety of assays. Contact your account manager to get more information.
Is Chlorpyrifos included in the compliance testing for cannabis in CA?
Yes, Chlorpyrifos is included in the Category 1 Pesticide Compounds Tests. There is a zero limit of detection for this category, meaning that if we find any traces of this pesticide in the sample it fails.

How can I verify if my rolling papers are contaminated?
If you have concerns about the source of your rolling papers, we encourage you to send them in for confirmation. For more information on testing, contact your account manager or fill out our contact form.
